City of Williamsburg

Rough Draft of Section 1 - Character of the City

We are currently revising the Goals and Objectives for Section 1 - Character of the City. Please look this over and give us your comments.

Goal: Protect and enhance Williamsburg’s unique character - the historic area, college, entrance corridors, urban environment and open spaces.

A. Protect the character and integrity of the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area, the historic campus of the College of William & Mary, and the City’s historic neighborhoods and commercial areas.

B. Protect significant archaeological resources by ensuring that they are either preserved or recovered through a resource management plan.

C. Cooperate with the College of William & Mary to ensure that the improvement and expansion of facilities both on and near campus respects the character of the community and of the College.

D. Improve the City’s major entrance corridors, working cooperatively with James City County and York County on corridor issues since the visual quality of these entrances transcends jurisdictional boundaries.

E. Develop regulations, design standards and capital improvements to preserve and enhance the character of Williamsburg’s urban environment.

F. Encourage the conservation of open space in the City and promote preservation, maintenance and access to natural resource areas through efforts such as public acquisition, delineation of greenbelt corridors, private dedication of easements, and passive recreational use.

G. Ensure that future development meets the standards of the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act.

“The Comp Plan should be a Vision Statement, not necessarily confining itself to things the Planning Commission can do directly. The Planning Commission helps set the vision. It is up to City Council to implement this vision.” - Note: This was a comment made to the Planning Commission at the June 21 Work Session

Since the Environmental Services page is not up yet, I’ll use this space for comment.

I would very much like to see Williamsburg take a strong stand on environmental protection, which means, among other things, MORE RECYCLING!

Although we seem to do as well as other jurisdictions in the area, we’re not doing much. We can’t even recycle all of our #1 and #2 plastics, let alone other plastics.

When I tried to recycle an old metal dehumidifier, I couldn’t. I ended up paying $3.00 to dump it.

We don’t even have penalties for trashing - rather than recycling - those things that we do contract to recycle.

Williamsburg can and should do better.
