College Expansion
A friend gave me the following letter to the editor in The Free-Lance Star in Fredericksburg, Virginia. It seems that I am not the only one concerned about a university expanding and destroying their neighborhood. If you read the article and insert “College Terrace” whenever the autor writes “College Heights” I could have written it myself.
I hope UMW doesn’t take over my neighborhood
After reading the article regarding the University of Mary Washington’s wish to purchase two homes in College Heights, I was scared and very upset ["UMW may buy vacant mansion.” Jan.23].
I just recently moved into College Heights and I love it. One of the reasons I moved there was its proximity to everything, including downtown and the college, and its quite atmosphere.
I didn’t move there to be taken over by an institution that up until now I respected. They’ve already changed their name; I hope they don’t change their reputation.

Ms. Redding writes that she moved into College Heights for its “proximity to everything, including downtown and the college.” In other words, she likes Fredericksburg just as it is, the result of 200+ years of growth. The city, she thinks, should halt all change at this precise moment.
You’re right—this sounds just like Williamsburg.
